US health authorities said … they will import a drug to treat ovarian, bone marrow and AIDS-related skin cancer from India in order to ward off a worrying shortage.

“Lipodox will be imported as an alternative to Doxil,” the US Food and Drug Administration said in a statement, noting that a temporary deal has been made with Sun Pharma Global FZE in India to supply US patients with the drug.(...)

Mediator, a drug licensed for use by diabetics that became widely prescribed in France as a slimming aid, “probably” caused at least 1,300 deaths before it was withdrawn, a study published on Thursday said.

Mahmoud Zureik of the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm), who co-led the probe, told AFP that around 3,100 people had required hospitalisation during the 33 years during which the drug was sold.(...)

A person’s lifetime risk of getting heart disease may be much higher than previously thought, according to a major US study published on Wednesday.

A single risk factor — such as smoking, having diabetes, high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol — can significantly boost one’s likelihood of having a heart attack or stroke at some point in life.

However, most studies to date have focused on how such risks play out over the short term, such as five to 10 years, giving an unrealistic picture of the longer term, said the study in the New England Journal of Medicine.(...)

Pfizer’s Inlyta drug for patients with advanced kidney cancer got the nod from U.S. regulators on Friday, boosting the company’s plans to offset plunging Lipitor sales.

The Food and Drug Administration said the drug, known generically as axitinib, was effective at treating patients who did not respond to another drug for kidney cancer.(...)

Women with breast cancer who take antiestrogen supplements may be decreasing their risk for melanoma, according to a study published Wednesday in Cancer Prevention Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Christine Bouchardy, professor at the University of Geneva and head of the Geneva Cancer Registry, and colleagues analyzed data from 7,360 women who had breast cancer between 1980 and 2005. (...)

A new study led by Harvard School of Public researchers provides a novel explanation as to why some tuberculosis cells are inherently more difficult to treat with antibiotics.

The discovery, which showed that the ways mycobacteria cells divide and grow determine their susceptibility to treatment with drugs, could lead to new avenues of drug development that better target tuberculosis cells. The study appeared Thursday in an advance online edition of Science.(...)

It’s a dream of medical science that looks tantalizingly within reach: the artificial pancreas, a potential breakthrough treatment for the scourge of type 1 diabetes.

Meant to mimic the function of a real pancreas, the artificial version is a complex device that combines a pager-sized continuous glucose monitor and sensor that tracks blood sugar with a pump that automatically delivers the correct dose of insulin at just the right time.

Winter, cold weather and your skin.

In many parts of the country winter brings cold weather and a drop in humidity. Heaters in the home are running which adds to the dryness of the air. Skin tends to lose its water by evaporation into this dry environment.

This is particularly extreme with aging or with diabetes, when the skin’s oil glands become less productive. Without a barrier of oil the skin can’t prevent this evaporation and is much more prone to becoming dry.

A common sign of excessive dryness is cracking or fissuring of the skin on the fingers, toes or heels of the feet. Widespread flaking and peeling of skin can be seen as can redness and irritation.(...)
